I want to share the exciting news about my company! I have purchased Dube Consulting from my longtime friend and colleague, Nancy Dube. The closing this month coincides with the third anniversary of the opening of my business, Melody L. Beach Consulting Group.

If you are new to my newsletter, welcome! I write a blog or newsletter each month about Human Resources topics or related current events. You can see my two most recent blogs below.

I have been working with Nancy, who has owned her company for more than 10 years, for the past three years. Our plan from the beginning was for me to buy her business when she was ready to retire. I was her eyes and ears on the ground when she moved to North Carolina a year ago, which gave me the opportunity to solidify relationships with many of her clients. Working with Nancy also has helped me find the confidence to go out and find potential clients for my business.

The acquisition will enable me to increase my client base and geographic reach. It also will facilitate the development of relationships with other entities, the creation of new partnerships and access to advanced resources.

Nancy and I have been friends for years. We met when she was a contractor for a company where I worked. That business also is where she met the man she later married, and I attended their wedding. She left to start her own company and I rekindled our relationship when I was thinking about setting up my business.

Here is a lesson I learned in the process – when I left my last job, I realized I had let my business relationships lapse. It is very important to nurture your connections because you may need help with a job search sometime. I reached out to Nancy to find out how to establish a business.

My new venture involved strategic marketing, logos and a website. I spent money on paper advertisements to plant the seed about an up-and-coming HR consultant available to help small- and medium-sized businesses. After three or four months, my website was ready to go live and I switched to promoting myself online.

Starting my own business was thrilling, it was invigorating, it was a challenge I felt I was up to. I decided I wanted to take a chance on myself instead of another employer. Three years later, I am taking my business on a new growth trajectory.

I am delighted with this acquisition and the opportunity to expand my business. I am looking forward to bringing Nancy’s clients into the fold and working with both my new and current clients!

Reopen businesses safely for employees, customers

The unknowns of COVID-19 and a cautious reopening of society are causing a lot of stress for employees and employers alike. Employers are facing myriad considerations as Massachusetts businesses gradually return to a new normal. Employees, meanwhile, may not want to return to work because of fear or they are making much more money with unemployment and CARES Act subsidies than they made on the job.

Keep your resume fresh

Always keep your resume updated. You never know when you might need one.

When more than 30 million people find themselves without work just since March, an updated resume has never been more important. In the wake of the economic upheaval brought on by the coronavirus, many people will be looking for new jobs as businesses cautiously reopen.
